RISO is a low-cost, eco-friendly print process with a unique lo-fi aesthetic. Invented in Japan in the 1980s as a duplicator for mostly schools and offices, RISO is now extremely popular with graphic designers, artists and illustrators.
Often described as mechanical or digital screen printing. The machine makes a stencil or ‘master’ of your artwork and wraps it around an ink drum. Ink is then pushed through the stencil onto the paper as the drum rotates at high speed creating multiples of your artwork.
Once each master is made, the machine can reproduce thousands of copies very quickly and cheaply. It’s most efficient when used for print runs of 50+ prints, as most of the cost is in making the masters.
RISO is perfect for flyers, posters, artwork, illustrations, comics, booklets, zines, indie mags, programs, cards and small editions.
One of the most important aspects of the RISO is that is it extremely energy efficient, with no harmful emissions and very minimal waste. The printer uses a soy based ink and banana paper stencils. Better for the environment all the way around!
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
